Our work entitled “From the Road to the Field: Decoding Chemical Transformation in Aging Tire and Artificial Turf Crumb Rubber” has been accepted by Environmental Science & Technology. This is the 2nd paper from our recent PhD graduate, Dr. Madison McMinn.
What happens to tires after they are repurposed as crumb rubber on artificial turf fields? We conducted a comprehensive study tracking the chemical transformation of tire and artificial turf materials as they age in real-world conditions. We found that tire materials degrade faster when water present, and we found hundreds of unknown transformation products using a combination of trend analysis and molecular networking.
